Imagine is the second studio album by British singer John Lennon, jointly produced by Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Phil Spector, and released by Apple Records on September 9, 1971. Compared to his debut album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, the arrangements on Imagine are richer and more polished. The title track, “Imagine,” went on to become one of Lennon’s signature songs.
The album was recorded between early and mid‑1971 at Ascot Sound Studios, EMI Studios, and the Record Plant in New York City. Contributing musicians included former Beatles member George Harrison, keyboardist Nicky Hopkins, bassist Klaus Voormann, and drummers Alan White and Jim Keltner. Lyrically, Imagine reflects themes of peace, love, and politics, as well as Lennon’s experiences with primal therapy. It also reveals his personal tensions—most notably in “How Do You Sleep?”, directed at former bandmate Paul McCartney. A large amount of footage from the recording sessions was originally intended for a documentary that was later shelved, though portions appeared in the 1988 film Imagine: John Lennon and the 2018 documentary John & Yoko: Above Us Only Sky.
The album achieved both critical and commercial success, topping the charts in the UK and the US Billboard 200. Alongside Plastic Ono Band, it is widely regarded as one of Lennon’s finest solo works. In 2012, Imagine ranked 80th on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The album has been reissued multiple times, including the 2018 release The Ultimate Collection, a six‑disc box set featuring previously unreleased demos, rare outtakes, “evolution documentaries” detailing each track’s creative process, and unique mix versions.
