Santana – Ultimate Santana

Led by Latin guitar legend Carlos Santana, the band Santana is considered the pioneer of Latin rock. Over nearly four decades of success in the pop music world, Santana’s albums have sold over one hundred million copies worldwide. As the band’s latest compilation release, Ultimate Santana debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week with first-week sales of 56,000 copies, becoming Santana’s fourth Top 10 album.

Among the 18 tracks featured on this compilation, 11 are works released after 1999. In addition to four major hits from the 1999 Grammy-winning album Supernatural — including “Smooth” featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and “Corazón Espinado” featuring Maná — Ultimate Santana also includes collaborations such as “The Game of Love” with Tina Turner (as well as a version with Michelle Branch), “This Boy’s Fire” featuring Jennifer Lopez and Baby Bash, and the newer hit “Into the Night” recorded with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, which currently ranks No. 13 on the Hot AC/Adult Top 40 chart.

Judging from the track selection, Ultimate Santana emphasizes Santana’s later-period works. From a broader perspective, it may not capture all of the band’s classic hits, but this focus on more recent material feels well-suited to the tastes of contemporary pop audiences.
